Pollock-Krasner Foundation 2020 Winter Grantees Includes DC-Based Carol Rowan

August 16, 2021 – Carol Rowan Receives Grant to Support Creation of New Work

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation announced its 2020 winter grantees, including DC-based artist Carol Rowan who also also maintains a studio in Maine. Established in 1985 though the generosity of Lee Krasner—one of the foremost abstract expressionist painters of the 20th century—the Foundation is a leader in providing financial resources to emerging and established visual artists internationally, allowing them to focus on creating new work, as well as non-profit organizations that support artists. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than 5,000 grants in 78 countries, for a total of nearly $79 million.

Rowan received her education at Pratt Institute. Her career has been dedicated to realistic and detailed drawings and paintings, and subjects with a sense of history and calm are common themes in her work.

“The Pollock-Krasner grant will enable me to modernize and upgrade my 1830s barn in Nobleboro, Maine into a working studio. To have heat and light in the winter months will be invaluable for my continued work. I am honored to be a recipient of this grant and to be amongst the other talented artists, and I am indebted to the gallerists, collectors, and museums who have appreciated my work for decades.”

Through its individual artist grants program, the Foundation provides financial resources for artists to create new work, acquire supplies, rent studio space, prepare for exhibitions, and offset living expenses, allowing them to better pursue their art. The Foundation also provides grants to organizations that directly engage with artists, such as museums and galleries, by funding exhibitions, artist residency programs, and other artist-focused initiatives. The Foundation supports exhibitions of the work of Krasner and Pollock, as well as organizations and academics that advance scholarship about the artists.

The Foundation recognizes artistic excellence through special awards—the Lee Krasner Award and the Pollock Prize for Creativity—both selected by a Pollock-Krasner Foundation jury based on recommendations from a network of nominators. Lee Krasner Awards are given in recognition of a lifetime of artistic achievement. Recent recipients have included Nell Blaine, Squeak Carnwath, Alfred Leslie, Don Nice, and Dorothea Rockburne. In 2016, the Foundation launched the Pollock Prize for Creativity, which is awarded to an outstanding artist whose work embodies high creative standards and exemplifies the impact of art on individuals and society. Recipients have included Gideon Mendel, Amy Sherald, and Todd Williamson.
